WEAVINGS OF KABIR • CARD 02

The Musk Deer

The Verse

कस्तूरी कुंडल बसै, मृग ढूंढे बन माहि।

Kastūrī kundal basai, mrig dhūndhe ban māhi.

“The musk is in the deer’s own navel, but it hunts through the forest looking for it.”

The Unspun Thread • The Context

This poem draws upon a classic Indian poetic metaphor: the musk deer (Kasturi Mrig). Deep within the deer’s own body, a magnificent, intoxicating fragrance develops naturally. Unaware that the scent is originating from its own navel, the deer grows wildly agitated. It runs frantically through briars, thickets, and dark forests, sniffing the earth and exhausting itself trying to locate the source of the beauty. Kabir uses this to mirror the tragic, beautiful comedy of human nature.

The Knot • The Mind’s Trap

This card highlights the specific illusion of inherent lack. The mind whispers that you are empty, broken, or insufficient on your own, forcing you to hunt through the “forest” of the world for external anchors. We look for our fragrance in relationships, careers, status, or praise. When we do this, we become like the frantic deer—exhausted by our own external striving because we fail to realize we are the source of the magic we are hunting.

Weaving It Into Life • The Suggestion

When you feel the urge to seek external approval or change your outer circumstances today, hit pause. Take a piece of paper and write down three intrinsic strengths, resources, or beautiful qualities you already possess. Turn your attention away from the forest and appreciate the fragrance of your own being.
