Kabir lived among many ascetic monks and spiritual seekers who gave up their families, homes, and money to live in poverty, believing this external sacrifice would grant them enlightenment. Yet, Kabir observed that even in their absolute poverty, these monks would argue viciously over who sat closest to the teacher, who was holier, or who deserved the most respect. He realized that changing your outer clothes or physical environment is entirely useless if the deep human hunger for identity and specialness remains untouched.

This card highlights the slippery illusion of “spiritual pride.” You might let go of a toxic habit, simplify your lifestyle, or do deep personal work, but the ego will secretly use those exact achievements to build a new pedestal. It whispers that you are wiser, simpler, or more evolved than others. The trap is substituting material greed for psychological greed—the intense craving to be recognized, validated, and looked up to.
