In Kabir’s era, people would avoid critics and contrarians at all costs, preferring the sweet company of flatterers. Kabir turned this social rule on its head. He suggested that an honest critic is actually a hidden spiritual blessing. While friends might blind you with praise, a critic point-blank reveals your rough edges, blind spots, and ego reactions. They do the heavy lifting of showing you where you still need to grow, entirely free of charge.

The ego builds a high wall of defensiveness. When someone criticizes your work, your choices, or your behavior, the mind instantly constructs arguments to protect its image. The trap is rejecting discomfort. By running away from critics or fighting back with anger, you throw away a perfect, free mirror that could help you wash away your flaws without needing soap or water.
