WEAVINGS OF KABIR • CARD 17

The Swan’s Choice

Verse

हंस सैर मानसरवर, मुक्ता मुक्ता चुगहीं।

Hans saer mānasovar, muktā muktā chugahīn.

“The spiritual swan swims in the sacred lake, choosing to peck only at precious pearls, never at pebbles.”

The Unspun Thread • The Context

Kabir often referenced the legendary Hansa (the divine swan) that leaves the muddy puddles of the lowlands to swim in Manasarovar—a mythical, pristine lake high in the Himalayas. Indian folklore says this swan possesses the unique power of Neera-Ksheera Viveka (the ability to separate milk from water with its beak), choosing to nourish itself only with the purest elements and pearls. Kabir saw this as the ultimate blueprint for how an elevated soul handles a noisy, cluttered world.

The Knot • The Mind’s Trap

Your attention is your most sacred currency, yet the mind easily defaults to grazing in muddy puddles. The ego loves to consume cheap distractions, scroll through online drama, or obsess over superficial opinions and pebbles of gossip. The trap is feeding your consciousness junk food and then wondering why your internal waters feel foggy, agitated, and heavy.

Weaving It Into Life • The Suggestion

Be the sacred swan today. Audit what enters your eyes and ears over the next few hours. Consciously turn away from shallow entertainment or anxious news, and intentionally choose “pearls”—spend fifteen minutes with a deeply inspiring text, listen to a piece of elevating music, or have a conversation that genuinely warms your heart.
