The Muddy Water

WEAVINGS OF KABIR • CARD 19

Verse

पानी ही ते बरफ भया, बरफ गया बिलाय। जो था सोई भया, अब कहु कुछ गया न जाय।

Pānī hī te baraf bhayā, baraf gayā bilāy. Jo thā soī bhayā, ab kahu kuch gayā na jāy.

“Water turns into ice, and ice melts back into water. What it originally was, it becomes again; nothing is truly lost.”

The Unspun Thread • The Context

As the seasons shifted over the north Indian plains, Kabir watched the flowing rivers freeze into jagged, rigid sheets of winter ice, and then melt back into fluid, rushing currents under the summer sun. He realized that the water didn’t change its essential nature; it just temporarily changed its form based on the temperature around it. He sang this to remind us that no matter how turbulent, frozen, or muddy our passing emotions feel, our core essence remains completely pure and undamaged.

The Knot • The Mind’s Trap

When a heavy emotional storm moves through—bringing waves of grief, irritation, or fear—the ego panics. It convinces us that this heavy, frozen state is our permanent reality. We resist the feeling, which freezes the emotional ice block even harder into our chest. The trap is identifying with the storm rather than remembering that you are the vast sky through which the weather is passing.

Weaving It Into Life • The Suggestion

Allow the stirred-up waters of your heart to simply exist without fighting them today. If an uncomfortable emotion or an anxious thought rises, do not try to fix it, freeze it, or push it away. Sit quietly, breathe warm awareness directly into that physical sensation in your body, and let the warmth of your own presence naturally melt the ice back into free-flowing, clear water.
