WEAVINGS OF KABIR • CARD 20

The Wild Elephant

Verse

मन गजेन्द्र मनमानी करे, अंकुश दंत न माने।

Man gajendra manmānī kare, ankush dant na māne.

“The mind acts like a wild elephant running amok, refusing the sharp hook of discipline.”

The Unspun Thread • The Context

In ancient India, wild elephants were captured from the jungles and brought into the towns. An untrained, rampaging elephant could easily smash market stalls, tear down roofs, and crush crops out of sheer impulse. The mahout (trainer) had to use a small iron hook called an ankush to gently but firmly guide the massive creature. Kabir noted that our untamed mind behaves exactly like that wild elephant—running amok through our lives, reacting blindly to every passing trigger, craving, or flash of anger unless we bring it into alignment.

The Knot • The Mind’s Trap

This card targets the trap of emotional reactivity and lack of inner boundaries. The ego loves absolute freedom without accountability, often disguising impulsivity as “just being authentic.” When an anxious thought or a sudden irritation rises, the mind immediately jumps into the driver’s seat and runs wild, trampling your peace and fracturing your relationships. The trap is letting your temporary emotional impulses dictate your permanent character.

Weaving It Into Life • The Suggestion

Apply the gentle iron hook of conscious discipline today. The very moment you catch your mind beginning to spin, spiral, or react blindly to a frustrating situation or trigger, apply a firm internal “stop.” Interrupt the elephant’s charge. Step away from the situation, close your eyes, and take ten slow, deep, deliberate breaths to bring your massive inner power back under the steady guidance of your soul.
