Weavings of Kabir • Card 26
The Deep Diver
The Verse
जिन खोजा तिन पाइया, गहरे पानी पैठ।
Jin khojā tin pāiyā, gahare pānī paith.
“Those who dive deep into the water find the pearls. I remained sitting safely on the shore out of fear of drowning.”
The Unspun Thread • The Context
Standing on the banks of a great river, Kabir watched pearl divers take deep breaths and plunge courageously into the dark, churning depths to seek treasures on the riverbed. He also noticed a large crowd of people who sat safely on the sandy bank. They complained about having no pearls, but they were too terrified of the deep water, the currents, and the risk of drowning to ever leave the dry shore. Kabir used this to illustrate the difference between casual admirers of truth and true seekers.
The Knot • The Mind’s Trap
The mind is deeply addicted to comfort, safety, and superficial routines. The ego wants the rewards of a rich life—such as deep love, healing, and clarity—but it refuses to do the vulnerable, uncomfortable internal work required to get there. The trap is staying safely on the shore of your life, engaging in shallow chatter and half-hearted efforts because you are terrified of facing your deepest shadows or taking a real emotional risk.
Weaving It Into Life • The Suggestion
Leave the safety of the shore today and dive deep into one area of your life. Do not give a casual, surface-level response to a project, a feeling, or a conversation. Ask the uncomfortable question, express the raw truth you’ve been hiding, or commit completely to a creative endeavor with your whole heart. Face the depth, and retrieve your pearl.
